LIFE LATELY | Spoiled at Fishermall VIP Cinema.

Jr and I are avid cinema goers. Actually, Jr more than I. Since the nearest cinema from Jr who spend most of his week in Pililia is an hour away in Antipolo, I indulge him on weekends whenever he asks, “What’s good in the cinemas?”

We believe in going to cinemas to watch good movies. We believe in good, comfortable seats with folding arm rests. We believe in good sound in theatres and swear by Dolby Atmos. We believe in the joy of joining a group of people, collectively laughing, or crying or sighing. There’s not so much gasping in our cinema experiences because Jr is a scaredy cat who does not watch horror movies. We believe in popcorn and lemonade in movies. We don’t believe in wasting time in lines, so we’re always partial to cinemas with online reservations — Ayala Malls, Robinsons Magnolia, and as we recently discovered, Greenhills theatres.

The nearest cinema from us is at Fishermall. Compared to Trinoma, Fishermall is modest, in size, in its stores, in its crowds. It’s a quick errands mall — you need something quick from National Bookstore or the supermarket, and you’re a short 5 minute drive away, you go here. You don’t go here to kill time. There’s nothing here. Even the supermarket items are overpriced and National bookstore is small. If you want to watch a new and popular movie, you go here, because nobody makes an effort watch movies here, unless you live in the neighborhood.

And then, the Fishermall VIP Cinema opened up.

Even though we watched Rogue One the day before, when Jr’s mom called and asked if we wanted to watch the same movie at the newly opened cinema, we said yes. We liked the movie and didn’t mind watching it again. Or mostly because we wanted to try the movie house.

The cinema is housed in a stand alone building behind the big branch of Uniqlo at Fishermall Parkway. The movie house looked like the ones you see in the states. It had a large bright marquee outside the building and a lobby as you enter. At 500 a seat, you might think it’s quite pricey and would be left half empty. But as soon as we entered and settled, the people started trickling in and filling up the house. Our tickets were bought earlier in the morning, which was a good thing because because apparently, that night, it was booked full.

SM Director’s club had a recliner seat, so the fully automated seats were nothing new. But unlike the one serving of popcorn and drink that comes with the SM ticket, this one comes with unlimited popcorn and drinks – soda or coffee(!). When you’re done with your first (big) tumbler and cup, you don’t even need to leave your seat. You push a button and a staff will go to your seat and will ask what you need, bringing it to you a quick second later.

When we entered and figured out how to operate the recliners to almost a bed, I jokingly said all we need is a pillow and a blanket and we’re set. Well, they were ready to make sure you won’t feel jipped with the hefty ticket price. Because if you ask, they actually have a pillow and blanket for you.

Next time a 3 hour hollywood blockbuster comes around, we’re watching here. In our pajamas.
