CHEAP CHOWS | 7-11’s 7 Fresh Grilled Chocolate Pancakes

CHEAP CHOWS | 7-11’s 7 Fresh Grilled Chocolate Pancakes

I have a love-hate relationship with sugar.

Saturday’s breakfast was set in my mind: We were going to have fried fish and egg and rice. Until I discovered that the cooking oil I have in my kitchen cabinet was barely enough to cover the pan. But I did not fret, for I have a trusty good ol’ 7-11 just around the corner. It’s the nearest convenience store and the only one in two blocks of residential houses and condominiums. I’m sure they have cooking oil.

So I put on some decent clothes and rushed out for a quick 7-11 run. I brought just a hundred pesos: One, because I only need cooking oil and two, because I need ONLY cooking oil. I tend to buy chocolate and chips whenever I’m in that 7-11. As I am trying to cut down my sugar intake, I have to be conscientious as to what I am buying so I just take the money I need for cooking oil.

As soon as I saw the glass door leading to 7-11, a new posted grabbed my attention: 7 Fresh Grilled Chocolate Pancakes, with Nutella.

Nutella is the bane of my existence. I love Nutella so much I used to have a fun size version of it in my kikay bag. I love Nutella so much now that I don’t buy it anymore. It used to be a staple in our grocery list. It’s not so much of a spread in the house. It’s something I take a spoonful of after meals. Or before meals. Or whenever. And whenever I hit the bottom of the jar, I’d always be reminded that I ate the entire jar, because the husband never touches it. So I stopped buying it.

Kewpie, Tiparos, Nutella

No. Focus. We just need cooking oil.

I made a beeline towards the back of the store where the grocery shelf is. I scanned it once, and then twice over. I peered towards the back of some items to push my luck but no dice. They’ve got no cooking oil. It was 7 am and the nearest grocery store won’t open until 9. I have a husband who’s expecting to have breakfast before he leaves the house at 8. I’ve only got 100 pesos on me, and the tinapa meal is already 85 pesos for one. Of course, the only logical conclusion my mind ended up with is, ‘this is a sign’ — I guess I’m buying the grilled pancakes.

I grabbed bought both the chocolate and salted caramel pancakes. I was supposed to ditch the place and just microwave it upstairs like I would normally do when I buy 7 Fresh meals when I realized they’re supposed to be grilled. I handed then back to the 7-11 staff who kindly took it out of the packaging, placed it in the panini grill, heated it up, placed it back to its packaging and handed the hot bags back to me.

I took them up to a very grateful husband. The Chocolate pancakes tasted more like cake than pancakes and I would appreciate a little more Nutella in them. Surprisingly, I liked the Salted Caramel version.

VIDEO | VLOG #037 – S&R’s Nutella Strawberry Dessert Pizza

I have been good with keeping my meat cravings down. 10 days in and I have managed not to put a single bite of meat in my mouth. This is an accomplishment really, considering I usually cannot get through a day without a meal that involves meat, at least for the last 6 months. I know because I keep a monthly habit tracker, and the “NO MEAT’ column is completely unmarked since October. I am a person who keeps emergency bagnet in my ref, and I can always find an emergency scenario that deserves a bagnet break. I, sometimes, amaze myself with my resolve this time around. On one lunch recently, I actually spat out a lettuce from a Caesar’s salad because I need to flick off the bacon bits on it. To which Jr remarked, “It’s not even real bacon.”

Whereas before when Jr commiserated with this self-inflicted pain, I told him this time, it’s completely my thing. He can eat meat in my presence and I guess with age comes discipline, it doesn’t bother me as much anymore. Jr used to be so frustrated when we have to choose restaurants for us to eat out while trying to figure in my seasonal diet. Now, he can eat Spam Pizza from S&R and I’ll just tell my brain, it’s just spam over bread. I know how spam taste. I know how S&R pizza tastes. I basically know how that taste and in spite of the fact that it’s a limited offering, I don’t have to have it now. It’ll be alright. I will be okay.

There’s a lot of inner dialogue that goes on when rationalizing about food I can and cannot have.

But I did not entirely have the raw end of the deal here. Because S&R’s other limited offering is their Nutella Strawberry Dessert Pizza — it’s Nutella spread over S&R pizza crust, with a generous sprinkle of fresh strawberries. However delighted I am when I saw the ads on social media, I’m pretty wary about quick service promotions. Sometimes, the photos does not exactly match the actual product. As for this one, well, here’s the expectation:

And here’s the reality:

Reality

Not bad. Not bad at all.

The slice is big enough for two people, and since it’s really(!) nutella, there is a need to share in fear of diabetes. The pizza is more chewy than crunchy so dividing it in two can be a challenge, but speaking as a nutella lover, half the slice is enough to make you happy. The strawberries are small but decent. Be warned though — this calls for at least a 5 table napkins situation. Things will get messy.

Life Lately | Inside Out, Miniatures and La Creperie

Life Lately | Inside Out, Miniatures and La Creperie

“What’s happening?!? Are you okay?!?”

I startled my husband when I suddenly bawled my eyes out as I was watching Pixar’s latest animation, Inside Out. I couldn’t blame him. He knew I was watching some cartoons when he peered over my shoulder. I had my earphones on so he wasn’t following the story and just like that, I was wailing.

Damn these cartoon. Pixar really has it down when it comes to making adults cry. Remember that sequence in Up?

I’m going to say it: Inside Out is by far the best movie Pixar made. It’s cute —and a little too creepy — for kids, and it kinda helps parents open up the discussion on ‘feelings’. I found it a little too meta, which I love. All I can say is that in my Imagination land, there is a river made out of chocolate, just like the one in a  certain Batibot episode. The feels in the movie is real.

I have a thing for miniatures. Or maybe I just have a thing for miniatures I can eat.

I bought a small kewpie bottle in Osaka because I knew I was going to have a lot of sushi and sometimes, a little bit more of those Japanese mayo won’t hurt. I carried it around Japan in my bag and pulled it out when needed. Basically like a lotion. I bought a miniature bottle of Thai fish sauce the last time I was in Bangkok. It now sits on my work table in HQ for my emergency 7-11 sinigang days. I know my kidneys will eventually make me pay for it. Latest addition in my travel size condiments collection is the tiniest bottle of Nutella. I know it doesn’t make sense to buy a 30g bottle for 150 pesos when it’s more economical to buy the 400g bottle for twice that price, but I’m going to ask you — just like I asked my exasperated husband —  is it as cute?!?

Because this one is, and it now calls my kikay kit home… like a very tasty lipbalm.

Kewpie, Tiparos, Nutella

We tried a new crepe place that is not Cafe Breton default mode recently. We’ve been passing by La Creperie and thought we give it a go one rainy afternoon. Jr had the Blueberry Banana Crepe while I had the Churro Crepe, which is basically thin crepe you dip in thick Spanish Chocolate, while having a demitasse of the same Spanish chocolate to push it down. It’s diabetes in a cup and we all know, I am all for that. We ordered a pot of tea alongside which was wonderful.
